Travel Tip: Governors Island // New York City

Today there is again a travel tip from me, because: even if my time in New York is now half a year ago, there are still some places that I have not really presented enough. And it would be a pity if something like this would be forgotten, wouldn't it?? That's why I have a post about Governors Island for you today!

Governors Island

Governors Island is a small island in the south of Manhattan, which was used as a military base until 1997 – and then stood empty. Since 2003, a part of the island is open to the public, and offers the stressed New Yorkers the opportunity to really switch off. There are no cars on Governors Island, also stores and high houses are not to be found here. Especially in the summer, you can ride your bike around the island or attend one of the various events.

How to get there

Governors Island is only accessible by boat. There are two ferries you can use, one from Brooklyn (Pier 6, Brooklyn Bridge Park) and one directly from Manhattan (Battery Maritime Building). The crossing costs 2$ per person – there and back, and children under 13 travel for free. If you want to go more often, you can also get a season pass for 20$.

A day on Governors Island – worth it?

It depends, I would say. Because: if you have only a few days in New York, you will have enough to do, and in the end there is not so much to do on Governors Island, that it is worth to leave something else for it. But: especially if you live in New York for a longer time, and it is almost unbearably hot in the summer, it is definitely worth it. Because here you can get out of the hustle and bustle of the big city. First the wind and the incredible view from the boat, and then the quietness on the island, maybe the exuberant atmosphere when a festival takes place there.

There are many places in New York that are certainly worth a visit – and I'm sure you won't be able to visit them all if you're only there for a short vacation. It's worth taking the time to see Governors Island, go for a walk, sit in the sun and just unwind for a while. The view of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty are of course also great – but to relax you can also go to Central Park. Especially if you don't have the time to take a boat to the island.

All information about Governors Island you can find on the official website of the island.
